History of Babri Masjid

Construction (1528-1529): The mosque was built by Mir Baqi, a Mughal commander, under Emperor Babur’s reign. However, there’s debate around the exact date and historical records from that period are scarce.

A Shared Space (19th Century): For centuries, the site functioned as a place of worship for Muslims and Hindu. The first documented conflict arose in the mid-19th century when a Hindu sect claimed a temple once stood there.

Escalating Tensions (20th Century): The dispute intensified in the 20th century, with calls for a Ram temple at the site gaining momentum. Legal battles ensued, and in 1949, idols were reportedly placed inside the mosque, further straining relations.

Ram Mandir Campaign (1990): Bharatiya Janata Party officially started a campaign to build Ram Mandir on the site of the demolished Babri Masjid. BJP Leader LK Advani’s nationwide campaign led to violence around the country.

Demolition (1992): In a devastating turn of events, the Babri Masjid was demolished in 1992 by a Hindu nationalist mob from BJP and RSS, which sparked widespread violence across India. In the result around 2000 people died, and most of them were Muslim.
