Despite rigorous security measures, the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in Manipur’s Inner Manipur constituency encountered violence on April 19. Incidents of shooting by unidentified individuals occurred at a polling station in Thamanpokpi, under the Moirang Assembly segment, leaving three people injured. This prompted swift reinforcement of security in the affected area. Additionally, vandalism was reported at a polling station in Thongju Assembly seat, located in Imphal East district.
The turnout figures revealed that approximately 12.6% of the over 15.44 lakh eligible voters cast their votes by 9 a.m. Inner Manipur recorded a 13.82% polling rate, while Outer Manipur witnessed an 11.57% turnout in the first two hours of voting.
As polling commenced for both the Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur constituencies, reports surfaced of miscreants firing several rounds near a polling booth, sparking panic among voters. The incident, captured on video and circulated on social media platforms, lasted about 10 seconds, though the extent of casualties remains unconfirmed.
In the electoral arena, Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh represents the BJP in the Inner Manipur seat, while Kachui Timothy Zimik, a leader of the Naga People’s Front (an ally of the BJP), vies for the Outer Manipur seat.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh urged Manipuri citizens to exercise their voting rights, emphasizing the significance of safeguarding the indigenous population and territorial integrity of the state. Singh expressed confidence in the BJP candidates, endorsing their potential victory and support for the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre.
Singh’s appeals for voting coincided with his endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a third term, stressing the importance of strengthening the BJP’s position. Against the backdrop of sporadic violence since May 2023, which claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands due to clashes between communities, Singh emphasized the imperative of restoring peace in Manipur.
